The characters help us understand the story better by developing relationships.
Siblings
We know that Sadako had a very loving family. She was a well-liked and nice person. She had two brothers and a sister. Mitsue was her 9-year old sister who helped her with chores and made her feel happy. Sadako helped her 6-year-old brother, Eiji get ready for school in the morning. When she was in the hospital, he would bring her scraps of paper so she could make her paper cranes. Sadako loves to race with her 14 -year old brother Masahiro and they bicker like any other siblings. Masahiro is supportive of Sadako and does not crush her hopes of becoming better. He thinks making a thousand cranes will be a difficult task but offers to hang the thousand paper cranes anyway.
Best Friend
Chizuko has been Sadako’s friend since kindergarten. She gives Sadako hope and is there when she needs her. Although she is not superstitious, Chizuko tells Sadako about the thousand paper cranes and gives her a golden paper to start her flock. It is the first paper crane of Sadako’s collection.
Parents
Mr. and Mrs. Sasaki are Sadako’s parents. Mr. Sasaki owns a barbershop and they are not that rich. They give Sadako hope that she will get better. Even though they are not rich they get Sadako a silk kimono and some of her favorite foods to cheer her up. Despite the fact that she could not get up or chew her food she still made an effort to please them. She also felt bad that they spent all that money on her even though everyone knew that she would die soon.
Kenji
Kenji was a 9 -year old orphan with leukemia who Sadako met in the hospital and became friends with. He looked very sad as he did not have his parents and his relatives would visit him infrequently. When Sadako met Kenji, she became very thankful for her own friends and family and the support she had through her battle.
Nurse
Nurse Yasunaga was the caregiver to Sadako. She was a very practical nurse who did not show many emotions but she made Sadako feel secure at night and not lonely. She helped Sadako a lot.
