Sadako Sasaki was an 11-year Japanese girl. She had dark hair and brown highlights. She had very long legs and that is what made her a fast runner. She was a very optimistic, energetic girl who was always in a hurry. She called people “turtles” when they were slow. Sadako was superstitious and believed in good luck charms. She was determined to reach her goal to be on the junior high track team. She practiced everyday to be a good and fast runner.
The author described the internal feelings of Sadako, which allowed us to understand her thought process. We related to her more as it painted a better picture in our head. When Sadako was diagnosed with leukemia, she was very scared. She tried to act strong and cried only when alone. Since she believed in good luck charms she was hopeful and determined to get better. She fought the diseases with all her might by going through all the painful procedures and blood transfusions without complaining a lot. When her parents came to visit her, she was mad at herself because her parents were sad and she thought she was the reason for their sadness. As she got weak she was angry with herself for being slow and referred to herself as a “turtle”. Towards the end she was scared of death but did not have many people to share her feeling with. She tried to please her family by putting on the Kimono and tried to eat the treats that they brought her. She was a sensitive girl who recognized the sacrifices they made for her.
